Online seminar: Gianfranco Bertone
October 28, 2026
Our online seminar will take place on October 28 at 5:30 PM (CET), featuring a talk by Gianfranco Bertone (University of Amsterdam) titled “Gravitational wave probes of dark matter”.
Title:
Gravitational wave probes of dark matter
About the speaker:
Gianfranco Bertone is Professor of Theoretical Astroparticle Physics at the University of Amsterdam, where he is based at GRAPPA, the Center of Excellence in Gravitation and Astroparticle Physics, within the Institute of Physics. His research lies at the interface of cosmology, high-energy astrophysics, particle physics and gravitation, with dark matter as a recurring thread. His current programme, supported by NWO and by the ERC Advanced Grant De Tenebris, uses black holes and gravitational waves as probes of fundamental physics and cosmology.
Abstract:
After a brief introduction on the status of dark matter searches, I will discuss the prospects for discovering and identifying dark matter using gravitational waves. I will focus in particular on the environmental effects induced by different types of dark matter overdensity on the dynamical evolution of black hole binaries, and argue that future interferometers may enable precision studies of the dark matter distribution and particle properties.
